How to Clean Bathroom Tiles

Bathroom tiles can be a nightmare. Overtime, dirt and mould can build up in the grout and lead to an unsightly bathroom. Got guests coming over at the weekend? You can tidy as much as you want but if your tiles are dirty it will let your whole home down. Have a read of our post and you may find bathroom tile cleaning to be easier than you think.

Your tiles might be getting dirty for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Poor ventilation – always make sure you have a window open or the extractor van turned on when showering or bathing.
  • Dust and fibres – make sure you are keeping on top of washing your bathmat, towels, cloths and anything else that lives in your bathroom and is used regularly.
  • Soap and water – grout (the bit in between your tiles) is porous, which means anything that gets in there (such as shampoo, gels and soaps) can hang around and grow bacteria.

Bathroom Tile Cleaning

The safest and cheapest solution which tends to get the job done, is a vinegar and water solution. Vinegar is great because it is made up of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules, so basically it both hates and loves water. When applying to grime and dirt, it gets in there and lifts it from a surface. Simply mix up in a spray bottle 50% distilled white (or cleaning) vinegar and 50% water, then spray onto your tiles. If you want to save yourself some time, get yourself a good vingear spray. Use a good cloth to give it a scrub, then it let air dry. We recommend Robert Scott Hi-absorb Microfibre Cloths to really tackle the dirt and leave it streak-free.

Another great, natural cleaning method is to use lemon juice. Lemon is acidic, meaning it is perfect for those stubborn bathroom stains. You can mix it with water and spray it on like with the vinegar solution, or alternatively add your juice directly to a sponge and give your tiles a scrub. Tip: add some baking soda directly to the grout and leave for 10 minutes or so to really help lift the dirt.

Failing the above, it might be time to use a high quality cleaning product such as sprays or powders. Flash Bathroom Spray Is perfect for bathroom tile cleaning as well as the rest of your bathroom due to its powerful cleaning solution. Spray this onto your tiles directly then scrub with a good quality sponge and those tiles will be left shiny and smelling fresh. So now you know how to clean bathroom tiles!

Commercial Washroom and Bathroom Tile Cleaning

Chemicals such as bleach are also very effective in removing mould and dirt. We recommend using a 1:3 ratio of bleach to water and simply spraying it onto the tiles and giving it a wipe with a warm wet cloth. Remember, bleach fumes can be very harmful, so make sure to get your door and windows open when using it, and make sure to wear gloves!

Some tiles can have a tough build up of limescale, rust, fat or soap, so a much more aggressive cleaner is required. We stock Arpal Biotek Tile Clean (available in 5L bottles, perfect for commercial cleans such as full washrooms and kitchens) and this can be used in a variety of ways. All it takes is around 5 plunges in a 12 litre bucket of water, and you can get to work applying the solution to your tiles. Make sure to remove any loose debris, and give the solution plenty of time to settle in before scrubbing. As always we cannot recommend enough that you get some decent rubber gloves to protect your skin from irritation.

Issues With Mould

Bathrooms and other potentially damp/unventilated areas of your home or business can be prone to mould. Mould can cause real issues for your body such runny noses, eye irritations, and for asthmatics it can cause serious breathing problems.

So How Do I Stop Mould Forming?

Mould is caused by condensation, so a few little changes in your home should stop most issues. Make sure you are opening your window when you are showering or running a bath as this can really cause a lot of moisture. Also, when cooking, turning on the extractor fan and even opening the door can be really beneficial. Things like opening your windows on a morning and opening your door for half an hour each day will drastically reduce the moisture in your property.

How to Clean Mouldy Areas

The most effective way to remove mould is to use a dedicated mould removing cleaner, such as Astonish Mould and Mildew Blaster which is designed specifically for destroying mould and the spores that cause it. We like to use Astonish due to how quickly it gets to work and the gorgeous smell it leaves behind. Simply spray on the cleaner, leave for a couple of minutes, then wipe with a cloth to remove all traces of mould. Make sure to dispose of the cloth afterwards to ensure all spores are destroyed. Due to these cleaners containing bleach, hand protection is advised and try not to get it on your clothing!

Floor tiles

Just like your wall tiles, bathroom floor tiles also sometimes need some thorough cleaning. You can use the above methods to give your floor a sparkling shine, or even invest in some dedicated floor cleaner such as The Pink Stuff Miracle Floor Cleaner. This product is great and really easy to use. Bear in mind to wipe it away as soon as possible as it can potentially damage marble and painted surfaces if left to sit. It is also a good idea to test the product first on a hidden area to make sure it won't cause any issues.

All in all, you shouldn’t ever need to clean your bathroom tiles more than once every couple of months, so if mould is building up fast it might be time to take a look at your ventilation or change up your cleaning routine.
