World Asthma Day 2019
Every year, World Asthma Day is marked on the first Tuesday of May to raise awareness about asthma, improve care, and support people living with this long-term condition. In 2019, the theme chosen by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was “STOP for Asthma” — a reminder to pause and consider better strategies for management and prevention.
What Does “STOP” Mean?
- Symptom evaluation
- Test response
- Observe and assess
- Proceed to adjust treatment
The campaign encourages healthcare professionals, carers, and patients to work together in a stepwise way to control asthma and reduce risks.
Why World Asthma Day Matters
Asthma affects more than 300 million people worldwide, and whilst it cannot be cured, it can be controlled. Many people still suffer unnecessary symptoms, hospital visits, or limitations in daily life because of poor access to care or misunderstanding about treatment. World Asthma Day is an opportunity to spotlight education, reduce stigma, and emphasise the importance of personalised asthma management.
Managing Asthma in Daily Life
- Recognising triggers such as pollen, smoke, dust, mould, or cold air
- Using inhalers correctly and consistently
- Having an asthma action plan in place with your GP or nurse
- Staying physically active whilst knowing your limits
- Seeking support from community and advocacy groups
A Global Call to Action
World Asthma Day 2019 called on governments, health professionals, schools, workplaces, and communities to prioritise asthma as a public health issue. By spreading awareness and encouraging better care practices, we can help ensure that fewer people face life-threatening asthma attacks and that everyone has the chance to live well with their condition.
If you or someone you care for has asthma, speak to your GP or asthma nurse about creating or updating a personal asthma action plan.
