How to Clean a Rug

Could your rug benefit from a thorough cleaning? Learn how to clean a rug on your own, and you'll be able to bring all of your floorings back to life when you want. Area rugs can help to tie a room together, but they can also take a beating from foot traffic, pets, and spills. After a while, vacuuming simply isn't enough to get it spotless—which is when understanding how to do it yourself comes in handy.

Area rug washing is a simple task that you can complete on your own. Unless your rug is extremely delicate, there's no need to hire expert rug cleaners. Our guide will show you how.

How to Clean A Rug: Cotton, Synthetic and Wool

There is a different method for rug cleaning depending on the type of rug you have. We've got two guides, one for cotton and synthetic rugs, and another for wool rugs. This makes sure that you use the right type of products for the rug you have to prevent accidental damage.

Cotton and Synthetic Fibre Area Rugs

If your mat is small enough, you can wash it in your washing machine. Allow it to air dry after washing it on a cold setting on delicates. If your rug is too large for the machine, you could indeed clean it thoroughly by hand. We highly suggest doing this on a hot, sunny day because it will need to be washed and dried outside.

You will need the following products:

Follow the steps below to clean your rug:

  1. Step 1: Vacuum Your Rug

Vacuum the rug thoroughly on both sides. You want to continue making certain that all debris has been removed. If you have pets, you can use the brush provided to remove any stray hairs.

  2. Step 2: Take Your Rug Outside

Unroll your mat and drape it over a wall once you're outside. Beat the back of the rug with a broom to see if any more debris comes off. If you see dirt clouds breaking away, continue beating the rug until you can't see the dust and dirt clouds any longer. If your flooring has a latex backing, however, avoid beating it too hard as this may destroy the latex.

  3. Step 3: Shampoo Your Rug

Take the rug cleaning shampoo in order to wash the rug. Follow the mixing instructions on the bottle of your chosen product. You can also use washing up liquid blended in a bucket of warm water. Hot water should not be used as it can shrink the mat or start causing fading.

Before you begin scrubbing, check to see if the cleaner will end up causing the colours to bleed. To ensure that the solution is colour-fast, test it on an inconspicuous area of the rug. If the colour does not bleed, proceed to the next step. Please note, we always recommend to test a cleaning product on whatever you're cleaning - you can never be too precautious!

Work the cleaning fluid into a lather on the rug with a sponge or small brush. Allow the cleaner to sit on the rug for five minutes before rinsing. Anything less, and you'll be short-changing the cleaning process. Allow it five minutes to sink in and begin lifting dirt.

Using a hose pipe or buckets of clean water, rinse the shampoo out of the rug. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear, this means all the shampoo residue has been removed.

  4. Step 4: Dry Your Rug

Allowing an area rug to dry is the final step in cleaning it. To ensure the rug dries qucikly and effectively, you can try hanging it over a clothes horse, and if you don't have one available, air over outdoor chairs. Before returning the rug to the room, make sure it is completely dry.

  5. Step 5: Vacuum Your Rug Again

Threads and fibres can become compacted and squished during the cleaning process. Restore them by vacuuming or brushing the now-dry rug with a small brush. You are now finished and can relax on your newly washed carpet! Now you know how to care for your rug correctly, you can give it a wash whenever needed!

Wool Area Rugs

Wool area rugs require a slightly different cleaning process. The following information will get yours looking like new!

The following products are required to clean a wool rug:

Follow the steps below to clean your rug:

  1. Step 1: Vacuum Your Rug

First, thoroughly vacuum both sides of the area rug. Don't forget about the rear, which inevitably collects crumbs, soot, and filth.

  2. Step 2: Take Your Rug Outside

Bring the mat outside and lift it up against a railing or wall. Slap the rear of the rug, beating it with a broom to get more grime out. Repeat until no more dirt clouds appear.

  3. Step 3: Wash Your Rug

Mix your chosen shampoo as per the product instructions. Scrub the cleanser or detergent into the rug with a sponge until suds appear. Allow the liquid to sit and work on the rug for a few minutes before rinsing. Remember, always test the product on an inconspicuous area of the rug to check for colour-fastness.

  4. Step 4: Rinse Your Rug

Rinse the rug thoroughly with a water hose, making sure the water is free of soap suds before you finish. Firmly press the squeegee's rubber-edged blade into the rug and lift to extract as much liquid as possible, being careful to only work in the direction of the nap. If you do not have a hose, rinse and squeegee with a bucket of clean water, repeating until the water runs clear.

Dry your rug by hanging it over a clothes horse, and if you don't have one available, air over outdoor chairs. Make sure it is completely dry before putting back into use.

  5. Step 5: Vacuum the Rug

Vacuum or brush your area rug with a clean small brush to loosen the fibres, which may have compressed during the cleaning process. Then, place your rug back in the room and relax!

Outdoor Rug Cleaning

Outdoor rugs are a fantastic addition to any patio, deck, or backyard. They add colour, comfort, and a touch of style to your outdoor living space. However, being exposed to the elements means they can accumulate dirt, debris, and stains over time. Cleaning your outdoor rug regularly not only maintains its appearance but also prolongs its lifespan. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of effectively cleaning your outdoor rug to keep it looking fresh and vibrant for years to come.

1. Prepare for Cleaning:

Before diving into the cleaning process, gather the necessary supplies. You will need:

  • Broom or brush: To remove loose dirt, dust, and debris from the rug.
  • Vacuum cleaner: Useful for deep cleaning and removing embedded dirt and particles.
  • Garden hose: Required for rinsing and washing the rug.
  • Mild detergent: Opt for a gentle detergent suitable for outdoor use.
  • Soft-bristle brush: Ideal for scrubbing stains and removing stubborn dirt.
  • Bucket: For preparing a cleaning solution.
  • Clean towels or sponge: To blot excess moisture and aid in drying.

2. Start with a Thorough Sweep:

Begin by using a broom or brush to sweep the rug's surface, removing loose dirt, leaves, and debris. This preliminary step will make the subsequent cleaning process more effective and prevent any dirt from getting embedded in the rug's fibres.

3. Vacuum the Rug:

Next, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to thoroughly vacuum the rug. This step is crucial for removing finer particles, such as dust or pet hair, that may be trapped in the fibers. Vacuum in different directions to ensure all areas are covered.

4. Check for Stains and Treat Accordingly:

Inspect the rug for any visible stains or spots. Common outdoor rug stains include food spills, mud, or mildew. To treat stains, mix a small amount of mild detergent with warm water in a bucket. Apply the cleaning solution directly to the stained area and gently scrub with a soft-bristle brush. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach, as they may damage the rug's fibres.

5. Rinse with Water:

After treating the stains, it's time to rinse the rug. Use a garden hose to thoroughly rinse the entire rug, ensuring all the soap and residue are washed away. Make sure to flip the rug and rinse the other side as well. Proper rinsing is essential to prevent any soap build up that can attract more dirt.

6. Allow Proper Drying:

Once the rug is thoroughly rinsed, remove excess moisture by blotting it with clean towels or a sponge. Avoid wringing or twisting the rug, as it may damage the fibres. Hang the rug over a sturdy clothesline or lay it flat on a clean, dry surface, preferably in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Ensure both sides of the rug dry completely before returning it to its designated outdoor space.

7. Preventive Measures:

To maintain the cleanliness and longevity of your outdoor rug, consider implementing some preventive measures:

  • Regular Maintenance: Sweep or vacuum your outdoor rug weekly to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating.
  • Protective Covering: When not in use, cover your rug with a waterproof tarp or store it in a dry area to shield it from rain, snow, or excessive sunlight.
  • Spills and Stains: Attend to spills immediately to prevent stains from setting. Blot the affected area with a clean cloth or paper towel and follow the stain treatment process mentioned earlier.
  • Rotate the Rug: Regularly rotate your outdoor rug to ensure even wear and exposure to sunlight.

Cleaning your outdoor rug doesn't have to be a daunting task. With a little effort and the right approach, you can keep your rug looking fresh and inviting for years to come. By following the steps outlined in this guide and implementing preventive measures, you'll be able to maintain the beauty and durability of your outdoor rug, allowing you to enjoy a clean and inviting outdoor living space.
