How to Clean a Ceramic Hob

Step 1: Clean Off Debris

The first thing you want to do is remove any loose debris on the surface of your hob. Spray your preferred kitchen degreaser over the hob and wipe with a microfibre cloth to give it a quick once over. Buff the surface dry and afterward, sweep or vacuum up any food particles and dust that may have fallen out the floor in the process.

Step 2: Spray With Vinegar

Spray a light layer of vinegar on the hob, focusing on the ceramic hob rings as these are the main area that is subjected to food particles. Pay particular attention to burnt-on food. This liquid's acidity will help remove the grease and stains from your hob.

Step 4: Sprinkle with Bicarbonate of Soda

Bicarbonate of soda is a household ingredient that can be used to safely clean a ceramic hob and is very effective for cleaning in hard water areas. Sprinkle your hob with bicarbonate of soda, making sure that enough is on the surface to create a fizzing reaction. Once this occurs you know the cleaner is doing it's job!

Leave for a few minutes before moving onto the next step.

Step 5: Wipe with Kitchen Roll

Taking some kitchen roll, work the fizzing solution into any marks that are on your hob, applying pressure when wiping to dislodge the toughest of marks. Use the kitchen roll liberally, replacing whenever the paper gets overly greasy.

Step 6: Rinse Away the Remaining Residue

Using kitchen roll again, absorb as much of the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar mix that remains on the surface, and wipe away any of the burnt on food that has been dislodged.

Following this, dilute a small amount of washing up liquid in a bowl and using a microfibre cloth, wipe down the surface of the hob.

Your hob should now be sparkling and look like new! However, if your hob a has some tougher to remove marks that have remained on the surface, you may need to take the additional steps below.

Removing the Toughest Marks from Your Ceramic Hob

These steps will likely need to be carried out less regularly than those above and should be used to treat any tougher marks and burnt-on-carbon that may occur due to spilling food or liquid onto a hot hob.

If you're satisfied that your hob is clean following steps 1 - 6, you will not need to carry out these remaining steps.

Step 7: Remove Burnt on Food with Hob Scraper

If you have a ceramic hob, you'll need a hob scraper to remove the toughest burnt-on food.

The best way to do this is to scrape the food off in small sections, tackling each piece of burnt-on food one at a time.

You should also be careful not to scratch the surface of your hob by using too much force or by pressing down too hard with the scraper. Always make sure that you minimise the angle of the scraper on the hob, making sure that the scraper blade is as horizontal as possible. This further reduces any risk of scratches.

Step 8: Wipe Away Residue

Following scraping the hob, use a microfibre cloth and warm water to wipe away the residue left on the hob.

Step 9: Use a Hob Suitable Cleaner

For any remaining smaller pieces of burnt on food, use a cleaner suitable for ceramic hobs such as The Pink Stuff. Apply a small amount to a microfibre cloth, and work in a circular motion over the burnt-on food. As a mild abbrasive, using The Pink Stuff will agitate any burnt-on food that can then be easily wiped clean.

Please note, as with any cleaning product ensure that The Pink Stuff is suitable for use on your hob, and test on a small conspicuous area before using.

Shining Your Ceramic Hob

As a final step, if you want to ensure that your hob is sparkling, use a glass cleaner. Spray lightly over your hob and buff with a microfibre cloth!
