Wholesale Catering Supplies
Reverting to Sourcing Sustainably Is Essential
Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has triggered a trend for plastic again. Around the globe, requirement for bubble wrap for online shopping to face masks, gloves and takeaway food containers has surged, for obvious reasons.
Before the pandemic plastic was on its way out for many industries, including wholesale catering supplies. No longer were people wanting to use one use cups and bottles, they were demanding recyclable alternatives. Then Covid-19 came along, and the demand was for disposables again, the feared plastic crept back to the supply chain, led by customers fretting about virus contamination.
It is essential that the food industry places sustainability at the top of its agenda again soon, or years of hard work will just go to, pardon the pun, “waste”.
Presentation - It’s All About Taking Pride in What You Do!
Chefs of course are foodies, passionate about their creations and just love to produce deliciously tantalising food to ensure even the most discerning customer returns time and time again.
However, it’s the front of house staff that ensure everything looks perfect on the outside, to achieve that 10/10 from diners scoring their overall experience.
Everyone in the world has been living with Covid-19 for most of 2020 and it looks likely that it’s not leaving any of us alone in 2021 either.
Ensuring that safety standards are maintained in the wholesale catering supplies industry is essential. This includes the food we eat and the people who are preparing it too.
People who produce food cannot work from home. They cannot fry an egg over Zoom or bake scones on Teams! So, it is important that the people who are preparing the food are working in a Covid compliant and well risk assessed environment.
However, the importance of food hygiene was of course, important before the pandemic. Bad bacteria can make consumers very seriously ill with food poisoning and other food borne illnesses and therefore it has always been important for caterers to use colour coded chopping boards when prepping different food groups and colour coded cleaning supplies when sourcing mops, buckets, cloths, brushes and the like to prevent cross contamination. This way, the toilet cloths always remain in the toilet (or best still, in the bin after use).
Professional caterers know that the way to store and prepare food is also of paramount importance. Keeping fridges at 5 degrees centigrade and freezers at -18 degrees centigrade or below is essential too, a hanging freezer thermometer can help you ensure you achieve this – and making sure you cook your food straight from the fridge, not from the side. The food you are reheating needs to be piping hot and a temperature probe is a handy tool to check it is cooked to the right temperature. It usually should be over 70 degrees centigrade for at least two minutes. Just wipe the temperature probe with a probe wipe before you check the temperature of another food group so as not to cross contaminate.
Eating in Is the New Eating Out!
With Just Eats revealing that Pizza is the most popular takeaway of the decade and vegan orders up by 2900% in five years, eating in has become the new eating out. Takeaway food bags are now a staple item on every professional caterer’s shopping list.
As more and more restaurants turn to offer takeaways throughout the pandemic, it has become extra important to ensure that allergen information is accurately displayed and communicated. With little or no physical interaction between the customer and the person taking the order, large and vibrant allergen labels clearly marking the containers, need to ensure that those consumers with allergies are aware of the ingredients within so as not to cause a potentially life threatening allergic reaction.
