Essential Kitchen Cleaning Hacks Using Lemons

How does the saying go? When life gives you lemons make lemonade? Well we say, when life gives you lemons. Get cleaning your kitchen!

Follow these 5 simple cleaning hacks to get your kitchen shining..

#1 Cheese Grater

It’s so frustrating when your grater has little bits of cheese stuck in the holes, sometimes even after they’ve been through the dishwasher. Cut a lemon in half and then ‘grate’ the fleshy side of the lemon on both sides of your cheese grater. The lemon oil and juice help to cut the dairy fat and break up any of those proteins. After a quick rinse you should find that the lemon has done an excellent job and it also saves you from ripping apart your sponges!

#2 Clean your Kettle

If you’re anything like the guys at The Cleaning Collective HQ- our kettle is never off, we love a cuppa. Here’s a handy hack to easily descale your kettle. Mix 2 ounce of lemon juice to 2 cups of water and mix that into your kettle. Bring it to a boil and then let cool. Empty out the kettle and give it a few good rinses and there you have it, a clean limescale free kettle.

#3 Microwave

Lemons are literally your microwaves best friend. Put half a lemon in a bowl of water and turn it on high for 2-3 minutes, this will get rid of any nasty lingering smells. (Our purchasing manager loves fish so this is an absolute must in our office). Not only will this eliminate nasty odours, the steam will mix with the lemon oils and loosen all the build-up on the inside of the microwave, then simply wipe down the interior with a microfiber cloth.

#4 Refresh your Humidifier

Even if you frequently change the water in your humidifier, because of its damp environment it becomes a breeding ground for gunk and nasties that can start to really smell. To prevent that horrid smell that inevitably comes after repeat use, add a few tablespoons of lemon juice into the water. This should dramatically improve the smell.

#5 Create a Humidifier

If you don’t have a humidifier then hack #4 was a bit pointless for you, worry not because If you want to create a homeopathic way of eliminating dry indoor air and to give your home a citric fresh scent, then lemon is the answer. Simply add a few lemon slices to a saucepan of water and leave it to simmer for up to 10 minutes. This will combat all the dry air and smells you don’t like.

These are 5 simple, quick hacks to keep your kitchen fresh. We would not however recommend substituting cleaning products for lemons on a permanent basis, adding a little lemon into your routine however is a must! Check out some of the products on our website to assist you with your lemon cleaning, our microfiber cloths are really rather good!
